doesn&#8217;t produce enough insulin. In about 90% of cases, there&#8217;s autoimmune (immune-mediated) destruction of \u03b2-cells, and in about 10%, non-autoimmune (idiopathic) \u03b2-cell destruction. The immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells. As a result, the body can&#8217;t produce the insulin it needs to transport glucose from the bloodstream into cells, leading to elevated blood sugar levels.
