What is Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA)?
Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA) is a fast, safe, and non-invasive measurement method used to determine body composition. The device sends a harmless, imperceptible electrical current of very low intensity through the body. By measuring the resistance this current encounters as it passes through water, muscle, and fat tissue, your doctor obtains not only information about your body weight but also a detailed overview of your body tissue distribution.
Why is a Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA) Performed?
This comprehensive analysis, conducted in a clinical setting, provides vital data for the accurate diagnosis and monitoring of metabolic status:
- Fat and Muscle Ratio: Shows how much of the total body weight consists of fat mass and muscle mass, respectively.
- Regional Distribution: Detects which areas of the body (abdominal region, arms, legs) have increased fat accumulation, helping to assess the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
- Visceral Fat (Organ Fat): Measures the level of dangerous fat accumulation around the internal organs, which is not visible from the outside.
- Body Fluid Balance: Analyzes edema as well as the distribution of intracellular and extracellular fluids.
- Metabolic Rate: Calculates the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)—the amount of energy the body expends at rest—and supports the creation of an individualized treatment plan.
How is the Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA) Performed?
The assessment is completed within a few minutes in the comfortable environment of our clinic:
- Preparation: For the most accurate results, it is recommended to avoid heavy meals and excessive fluid intake 2–3 hours prior to the measurement.
- Positioning: The patient stands still on the analyzer so that the electrodes make contact with the body (usually standing barefoot on the device and holding the electrodes with their hands).
- Measurement: The device sends a gentle current through the body within a few seconds. The patient does not experience any discomfort during this process.
Evaluation: The detailed report generated by the device is immediately evaluated by specialist Dr. Burcu Meryem Atak Sançmış, alongside the patient’s blood values and hormone profile.
When Should a Body Analysis Be Performed?
BIA analysis is highly beneficial in the following situations to establish a metabolic foundation for treatment:
- At the beginning of and during a weight loss or weight gain program.
- To monitor metabolic changes during the treatment of insulin resistance, diabetes, or thyroid diseases.
- To track sports nutrition and muscle mass development.
In cases of unexplained edema or swelling complaints.
Advantages of Bioimpedance Analysis
- No Radiation Exposure: The method is completely safe and can be repeated regularly.
- Clinical Precision: Unlike conventional household scales, professional clinical devices provide medically precise measurement results.
- Fast and Practical: Preparation and measurement take no longer than 5 minutes in total.
Holistic Approach: Combined with the blood tests performed in our clinic, the analysis plays a crucial role in diagnosing TOFI (“Thin Outside, Fat Inside”) patients, who appear slim on the outside but have elevated internal fat levels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the BIA analysis not suitable for?
This method is not recommended for individuals with pacemakers or during suspected pregnancy.
How quickly are the measurement results available?
Immediately after the measurement is completed, the device generates a report that is evaluated by your doctor during the very same appointment.
What should I wear for the measurement?
Since electrode contact with the hands and feet is required, it is recommended to wear clothing that allows socks to be easily removed.
Can I exercise before the analysis?
To avoid distorted results, intensive exercise should be avoided immediately prior to the measurement.
